08 - Denmark: The art of Scandinavian design
I am passionate about interior design and I love to travel. I thought I would combine the two here on my blog by giving you my top ten selection of the most inspiring countries in the world when it comes to interior design and architecture… I will present one country each month, over the next 10 months. This list is of course non exhaustive and rather based on my personal experiences and aspirations.
The concept of “hygge” is key to the Danish culture. It is the acknowledgment of a feeling or moment of comfort and relaxation, whether alone or with friends. At home, hygge is associated with coziness and functionality setting the mood for a stylish yet welcoming interior design projects. Scandinavian design is generally characterised by its clean lines and minimalist shapes, monochrome colours and use of natural materials. The latter is particularly noticeable: organic materials like sheepskin rugs, curved wooden chairs, and woven baskets are omnipresent and often made from sustainable sources.
In recent years we have seen a revival in interest for mid-century Scandinavian furniture design. Consequently, a great place to start any design tour of Denmark in Copenhagen is Bredgade street featuring antiques shops with names such as Finn Juhl, Arne Jacobsen and Børge Mogensen.
