10 - Singapore: Nature inspired design
I am passionate about interior design and I love to travel. I thought I would combine the two here on my blog by giving you my top ten selection of the most inspiring countries in the world when it comes to interior design and architecture… I will present one country each month, over the next 10 months. This list is of course non exhaustive and rather based on my personal experiences and aspirations.
The city-state is mentioned as the eco-friendliest country in Asia by leading environmental institutions. In Singapore, to construct green buildings with minimum impact on the environment is becoming the norm. In fact, in 2005 the Singaporean government put into place the Green Mark scheme focusing on cutting down water and energy usage for both commercial and residential projects.
Singapore’s cityscape is characterised by organic architecture, a term coined by architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) to describe his own environmentally integrated approach to architectural design.
Indeed in Singapore, it is not rare to find buildings whose shape or function mimics nature like the honeycomb-patterned towers by Büro Ole Scheeren in Kampong Glam neighbourhood, the terraced gardens of Marina One Development in the Business District or the flower-shaped D’Leedon skyscrapers located in the tenth district and designed by Zaha Hadid’s firm.
